Schoolcraft First Graders met Duane Hayes, from Paradise Valley Buffalo Ranch, at the Bemidji Farmer's Market this fall. We invited Duane and Mary Hayes to come and visit the 1st graders at our school. We learned a lot about bison and their bison business. We learned that their oldest buffalo is 22 years old. We also learned that bison meat is healthier than beef. Did you know that it has 25% more protein than beef?
We like the idea of buying meat from Paradise Valley Buffalo Ranch, because it has not been sitting in the grocery store and it is fresh. We like that the meat comes from a farm near Bemidji and not from far away. We also know that it is healthier than cows meat.

Another community expert that we learn from was Kelly Larson from Northern Flight Farm. We learned that some chickens are almost extinct. She also taught us that most chickens are raised on a big farm. They are "big, fat, white commercial chickens." Kelly raises other varieties of chickens.
